Open Solicitation Cover Letter Example

Companies that have open positions generally advertise by posting job requisitions on online job boards, on the company’s website, or by taking out an ad in the newspaper. The purpose of the solicited application letter, also referred to as a cover letter, is to get an interview. It is your letter of introduction and should be written in a manner that captures the hiring manager’s attention and makes you stand out from the competition.

Format and Content

The solicited application letter format begins by stating the specific advertised position you are applying for, where you learned about the job opening and why you feel you are the best candidate. The body of the letter should contain examples of how you can help the organization achieve its goals based on your experience, education and skills. The concluding paragraph contains your contact information and thanks the hiring manager for his or her time and consideration.

Sample

This solicited application letter sample is written by a professional who is seeking a position that is similar to past positions. She uses job-specific terminology to show she is knowledgeable in the field of web development. Additionally, she lists past accomplishments that are important to all companies that depend on their online presence as a strategic marketing channel.

I increased page views and improved the company’s search engine ranking to first page status by employing a variety of techniques, including key word optimization, co-marketing strategies and strategic online advertisement placements.

My experience in working on cross-departmental teams has allowed me to develop strong interpersonal skills. I am experienced in both the development and marketing aspects of web development.I am skilled in various programming languages, search engine optimization techniques, functional enhancement identification and implementation and in creating attention-getting web content. A job seeker may desire employment with a particular company that has not posted open job requisitions. In this case, an unsolicited application letter is used as an inquiry about possible openings and to gain a hiring managers attention. The letter may be addressed to the head of the Human Resource department or to the manager of a particular division. The letter is most likely to be read when it is addressed to a particular person rather than the generic to ‘whom it may concern’ salutation.

Format and Content

Write the letter so that it immediately captures the reader’s interest by explaining how you could benefit the company. Keep the content broad in scope, especially if you want the manager to consider you for any position in the company that utilizes your specific skills and abilities. The unsolicited application letter format is much like the solicited letter format: the first paragraph serves as an introduction, the body of the letter makes an argument as to why you are the best job candidate and the closing paragraph contains a request for an interview and your contact information.

Sample

This unsolicited application letter sample is written by a job seeker who was advised of possible unadvertised job openings by an employee of the organization. She communicates her value by using specific examples of her accomplishments. She expresses a preference for a particular area but indicates her willingness to consider other openings.
